Camera ready

March 4th, 2013

The state Senate is expected to vote Tuesday on a bill that would give celebrities in Hawaii a new legal tool against paparazzi.

The bill, known as the Steven Tyler Act for the Aerosmith singer, who has a home on Maui, would allow celebrities to bring civil lawsuits against photographers who take pictures of personal or familial activities. Celebrities would only be protected, however, if they are on property they own or lease and have reasonable expectations of privacy.

Senate Bill 465, modeled after a California anti-paparazzi law, would provide an immediate appeal process for photographers who claim they were engaged in work protected by the First Amendment.

Tyler and Mick Fleetwood, the drummer of Fleetwood Mac, who also has a home on Maui, told state senators at a hearing last month that aggressive paparazzi intrude on their privacy.

The Society of Professional Journalists and other First Amendment advocates are concerned that the bill could infringe on legitimate newsgathering.

They're just wannabe stars, as if someone really wanted to pry into THEIR lives, ha-ha-ha. The last time you saw politicians swoon over "stars" like this was when Gene Ward made a floor presentation to Duane "White Trash" Chapman right before he used the "n" word to describe his son's girlfriend. Get a grip, people!

What is going to happen now is that legitimate media (still and video) will rent out a helicopter and since "above ground" is fair game and NOT private property, they will get their "assignment shots"....with the right lenses and equipment for it! Even for paparazzis, if their publication HIRES a copter and pilot, I am sure that as long as payment for the flight is paid, there is NOTHING that the "celebrity" can do! Also....the many thousands of folks out there with point n shoots, iphones, smartphones, androids, etc. and KNOW how to zoom in for a shot....are the celebs going to sue them as well??? To the many celebrities out there in "lala land".....be happy you got fans who support your music, talents, and purchase merchandise....your fans ARE YOUR "bread n butter"...know what i mean???

After all the dog is just another one without breath.
