The Democratic primary between U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz and U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa will require both candidates to raise more money than they ever have in previous campaigns.

On Wednesday, in an odd twist, allies for the two Democrats were raising money at the same Washington, D.C., hotel.

Irene Hirano Inouye, U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye's widow, held a reception for Hanabusa at the Hotel George.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., held a competing event for Schatz.
