Kathryn Xian, an activist who has pushed the state to address human trafficking and has sought to empower women through Girl Fest, said Monday that she will run for Congress.

Xian will seek the Democratic nomination in urban Honolulu's 1st Congressional District, which is being vacated by U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, who is challenging U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz in the Democratic primary.

Honolulu City Councilman Stanley Chang, Honolulu City Councilman Ikaika Anderson, state Sen. Will Espero and state Rep. K. Mark Takai are the other declared candidates for Congress.

Xian said she plans to make a formal announcement next Monday.

Xian is the executive director of the Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery. She is also the founder of Girl Fest Hawaii, which uses education and art to raise awareness about violence against women.

OK! Mahalo to Kathryn Xian for giving voters a choice of someone admirable to vote for. I don't want to say anything disparaging about the city councilmen or state legislators running for congress, but in my small view of their advocacy and efforts, they would only be puppets on a string for whatever intere$t$ $upport them.

  2. innocent observer:

advocating for women's rights, etc. is not the only thing that a congress person must do, there are many other things to know and do. Xian only experience is in the area of women's rights - sorry not enough smarts and experience, need someone with more broad knowledge of all the issues facing America today.

Let's find out some more about her before making a judgement.

  4. kamaaina808:

While her causes are admirable, I need to know more - and since I don't know a thing about her, I'll reserve my judgement of her candidacy for a later date.

  5. BUCK OFAMA:

She's a radical lesbian activist that made a name for herself by coercing (generally under the threat of ratting them out to law enforcement) enterprising, transient Asian adult service freelancers into proclaiming that they were "sex slaves" to further an agenda and get on the news. She has ZERO legislative experience and would be hard pressed to find the gender-neutral restroom in Washington, D.C. (or even at the State Capitol). While the current Democrat line-up consists of no-name nobodies and marginal losers, this woman leads the pack in obscurity and being utterly unaccomplished and unworthy.

Then again, in the Age of Obama, electing someone with ZERO experience, ZERO credibility, ZERO accomplishments and ZERO track record is, apparently, cool, trendy, forward-thinking and a sure-fire way to absolve yourself of white guilt.

If she can just get all of San Francisco to relocate to Hawaii, she might have a fraction of a snowball's chance in Hell of getting to Washington.

  6. Manoa_Fisherman:

Xian is a just trying to get the women's vote, since all the others running are male. I guess that she thinks that all she needs is the right sex and a single issue to go to congress.

  7. Manoa Kahuna:

It's always exciting when Hawaii gets a Congressional candidate who is from outside the conventional careerist list of suspects.

Kathryn Xian obviously has ambition and a record of accomplishment. She should make the 1st CD race interesting.

  8. Auto de Fe:

Is her campaign manager going to be that weird 'Fractured Politics' guy with the airbrushed wings?

  9. Especially Incognito:

Rookie politicians think can do what they campaign
but they lose since those who have money cannot pull their strings.
They lose by the rich people's fault.
Politics is about who can easily be manipulated. Winning to those
    who can be bought.

"Then again, in the Age of Obama, electing someone with ZERO experience, ZERO credibility, ZERO accomplishments and ZERO track record is, apparently, cool, trendy, forward-thinking and a sure-fire way to absolve yourself of white guilt." Zero from the comic book.

Zero population. China's way to keep population down by having a family to have only one child. One million parents equal assuming each has a child to one million babies.

Really? Is the name "Buck Ofama" acceptable on this blog? Classy. Real classy. I guess the value of allowing it is that it exposes the mindset and manners of alleged conservatives.

Funny, I was a Boy Scout, a group which seeks to inculcate young men with conservative, wholesome values. But I guess not everyone went through that program.
