Narrow lead

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz's campaign on Saturday released the results of an internal poll that showed the senator with a narrow lead over U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.

The poll, by the Mellman Group, a Washington, D.C., firm, was taken by telephone from Jan. 7 to Jan. 13 among 800 Democratic primary voters statewide. The margin of error was 3.5 percentage points.

The horse race:

Schatz: 41%
Hanabusa: 37%
Undecided: 22%

A new Hawaii Poll released on Sunday by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now showed Hanabusa with a 48 percent to 40 percent gap over Schatz. Eleven percent were undecided.
