Dismissed

April 4th, 2014

Stephanie Schriock, the president of EMILY's List, has dismissed President Barack Obama's endorsement of U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz.

EMILY's List, which helps elect Democratic women who support abortion rights, has endorsed U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa's primary challenge to Schatz and is raising money on behalf of the congresswoman.

“I feel like this is all part of the D.C. campaign,” Schriock told Buzzfeed in an interview. “The real campaign is in Hawaii.”

The Hanabusa campaign has sought to minimize the support Schatz has received from the Washington, D.C., establishment, arguing that the primary will be decided in Hawaii.

But some political insiders in Hawaii found Schriock's comments both baffling and tone deaf: the president of a Washington, D.C., based interest group dismissing an endorsement from Obama in a state where he was born and raised -- and remains popular -- as part of a D.C. campaign?
