William May, the superintendent of the Colorado Mental Health Institute, will become the new administrator of the Hawaii State Hospital in July.
May will replace William Elliott, who has been serving as acting administrator of the 202-bed psychiatric hospital in Kaneohe while holding down another administrative position.
“The department evaluated a number of candidates during an intensive nationwide recruitment process which began last summer,” Linda Rosen, the director of the state Department of Health, said in a statement. “Mr. May has the level of experience needed to manage the complex operations of the only psychiatric hospital in the state.”
A state Senate investigative panel has been looking into whether poor management has placed hospital staff at greater risk of assault by patients. Senators are also examining claims of nepotism at the facility.
