The Seafarers International Union of North America on Tuesday endorsed Gov. Neil Abercrombie's re-election.

The union represents about 1,000 workers in Hawaii.

“Through Governor Abercrombie’s outstanding record as a legislator and chief executive, he has a long history of support and dedication to the U.S. Merchant Marines and to Hawaii’s working families. He has fought to protect the Jones Act, the Maritime Security Program and our cargo preference laws,” Michael Sacco, the union's president, said in a statement.

Abercrombie is facing state Sen. David Ige in the Democratic primary.
