Emily's endorsement

July 11th, 2014

State Sen. Donna Mercado Kim on Friday earned the endorsement of EMILY’s List, the Washington, D.C.-based political action committee that works to elect women candidates to office in her bid for the 1st Congressional District, representing urban Oahu.

The group says Kim, the state Senate president, would continue a strong tradition of women’s leadership in Hawaii.

In a news release, Stephanie Schriock, EMILY’s List president, said:

"Donna Mercado Kim is a pro-choice, pro-education, pro-labor powerhouse legislator with a long record of service to the working families of Hawaii. From Honolulu City Council to the Hawaii House of Representatives to presiding over the State Senate, she has fought for women’s rights, clean energy, and accountable government. Donna has what it takes to continue the Hawaiian tradition of sending strong Democratic women leaders to Washington.”

Kim is in a crowded Democratic primary field that also includes state Sen. Will Espero, state Rep. K. Mark Takai, City Councilmen Ikaika AndersonStanley Chang and Joey Manahan, and human rights advocate Kathryn Xian. The Republican primary field includes former congressman Charles Djou and Allan Levene, while Calvin Griffin and Robert Meyer are running as non-partisan candidates.

This is almost a non-endorsement, unless your aim as a voter is to ONLY vote for feminist issues. Figure "Emily" would've wanted to go the way of Xian, but, uh, who dat, as referenced in an earlier Political Radar entry. Funny how "Emily" pretty much buried the mention of "women's rights" in the endorsement narrative; looks like they know a conservative wave it on its way.

Looks like "Emily" overlooked how Tammy Duckworth endorses K. Mark Takai. And that's nothing at which to scoff.

OK - Emily's List REALLY made a major mistake this time. Are they aware that Pat Roberts' Focus on Family is supporting her? What are they THINKING?

She voted against marriage equality. She delayed and tried to derail raising minimum wage. She's courting the GOP/Christian Taliban vote. She's anti-union and anti-environment.

Has Emily's List completely lost their minds?

  3. Karen Chun:

    Stephanie Schriock is delusional.
