State Sen. Donna Mercado Kim on Friday earned the endorsement of EMILY’s List, the Washington, D.C.-based political action committee that works to elect women candidates to office in her bid for the 1st Congressional District, representing urban Oahu.
The group says Kim, the state Senate president, would continue a strong tradition of women’s leadership in Hawaii.
In a news release, Stephanie Schriock, EMILY’s List president, said:
"Donna Mercado Kim is a pro-choice, pro-education, pro-labor powerhouse legislator with a long record of service to the working families of Hawaii. From Honolulu City Council to the Hawaii House of Representatives to presiding over the State Senate, she has fought for women’s rights, clean energy, and accountable government. Donna has what it takes to continue the Hawaiian tradition of sending strong Democratic women leaders to Washington.”
Kim is in a crowded Democratic primary field that also includes state Sen. Will Espero, state Rep. K. Mark Takai, City Councilmen Ikaika Anderson, Stanley Chang and Joey Manahan, and human rights advocate Kathryn Xian. The Republican primary field includes former congressman Charles Djou and Allan Levene, while Calvin Griffin and Robert Meyer are running as non-partisan candidates.
