Women Vote! a political arm of EMILY's List, has spent another $46,920 on mailers for U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa in her Democratic primary against U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz.

The national group, which supports Democratic women who favor abortion rights, has spent about $385,490 for Hanabusa in Hawaii so far.

Why is it OK for Emily's List to support only women candidates? We would be outraged if, for instance, an organization established by Caucasians would only support haole candidates. Woman can and certainly should vigorously support gender equity and oppose sexism … but isn't the Emily's List policy of women only candidates sexism? Will Emily's List automatically support the South Caroline Republican female legislator who urged her male colleagues to discuss issues in very simple terms so women could understand them?
